There is an
important movement afoot among designers and manufacturers that
I think deserves some recognition and applause. The industry lingo
for it is "sustainable" or "green" design.
In plain English
it means designing and building products that are Earth-friendly
in as many ways possible.
That means specifying
more recycled (and recyclable) materials. It also means working
on manufacturing processes that use less energy and fewer hazardous
materials.
What's Driving
the Green Movement In Office Furniture?
Oddly enough,
one thing that's NOT driving the movement is market demand. Nor
is it governmental decree.
Sure, people
are generally feel better about buying products that are environmentally
friendly. But one rarely associates that with durable goods like
office chairs. So no one's been asking for it.
But great designers
and forward-thinking manufacturers are always looking to solve more
than just the obvious problem at hand.
I mean, before
the Aeron, no one was asking for a mesh chair either. It's only
when you sit in a well-designed one that you realize it's helping
you in unexpected ways that really make a difference.
The same is
true for "green" design. Our customers aren't asking for
recyclable furniture. But isn't nice to know that more and more
companies are working in that direction anyway?

Herman Miller's
Mirra Out In Front Yet Again
You probably
don't know this, but the folks at Herman Miller have been pursuing
the Earth-friendly ideal for many years and in many ways. To them
it simply makes good long-term business sense.
You can read
all about what they're up to by clicking
here.
Their latest
sensation, the Mirra chair, is their most dramatic example of sustainable
design to date. It's made of 42% recycled content and is itself
96% recyclable.
Of course, it's
durable enough to sport a 12-year warranty, so it'll be a loooooong
time before it's time to recycle a Mirra.
But it's nice
to know that in the end, you're doing the Earth a favor.
Herman Miller
officially announced the Mirra on June 16th. We'll have them in
stock in August. Until then we're extending a $50 "thank you
for your patience" discount if you order early.
