We're not just
being nosy.
When you buy
a work chair from us we'll always ask a question or two about your
work environment...especially the floor.
Why? Because
if your chair is fitted with the wrong casters, you're not going
to be as happy and neither is your floor!
Most people
don't realize that the industry standard caster is designed for
industrial-grade office carpeting. (With today's sophisticated ergonomic
chairs, those hideous plastic mats are finally becoming obsolete!)
Don't try
this at home
So what happens
when you use those hard plastic casters on, say, a hardwood floor?
Two things, both of them bad:
One, they severely
mar your beautiful floor. And two, your chair flies across the room
when you push away from your desk.
When the Aeron
chair was first introduced, I made the mistake of overlooking the
casters on the one I brought home. I got the chair perfectly adjusted
and then pushed away to get up. I didn't stop until the chair hit
a lovely cherry cabinet about six feet away. The Aeron was fine,
of course, but it left a nasty dent in the soft wood. Ouch.
Soft casters
for hard floors and big casters for deep carpets
For non-carpeted
floors you should always get the coated casters. These rubberized
wheels hug the floor the way new tires hug the road. No more "ice
rink" syndrome. And they don't scratch either.
Plusher carpeting
also presents a problem for the standard casters. They dig in, making
it awkward or downright difficult to move around.
For deeper carpets
we have special larger casters that are 3" in diameter instead
of the standard 2.5". That extra half-inch makes a world of
difference.
Are your
casters still right for your new situation?
It's not uncommon
for a chair to get moved from one office environment to another.
When that happens, it's important to make sure you've got the right
casters.
It only takes
a few seconds to check. And only a couple of minutes to order a
new set if you need them.
